Overview
Mon. Feb. 21.
Cut some fern on Ohau Flat near Horse-shoe Cliff till 11.30 - then fired, with good effect, clumps on uncut lawyers in centre of flat. After dinner fired the bracken (through which I have cut several strips) on the terrace above the Mill swamp. Got a splendid burn, both cut + uncut fern burning quite clean. A good breeze sprang up + the logs also went well. Maud was delighted with the fire + the way it swept everything. It was about the best burn I've ever had, but the weather conditions are so favourable this summer. Logged up some burning heaps on track to main Leighton p[addock] gate + counted the 24 steers on Leighton p. Showers of rain at 5 pm so I was just in time with the fire.
