Overview
Sun. Apr. 4.
Up at 7 am - at 7.30 Mr. Ernest Hitchings, a most enthusiastic fisherman, called at whare to borrow an old pair of boots. Took some photos (1) The Makahika River + bridge from terrace near Main Ravine (1/4 pl[ate].) (2) Panorama of Mill + Leighton paddocks from entrance gate to N[orth]. Bl[oc]k (1/4 pl). (3) The Mill p[addock]. from cliff near entrance gate (1/2 pl) + (4) Moonlight on river. Several parties of pig-hunters passed the whare + they bagged a dozen pigs among them. Gave the whare its yearly, thorough sweep out + after dinner went for a walk up to Ohau Summit - good grass on south end of block - tarred the tops of the honeysuckle battens on east bdy [boundary] fence on Ohau Summit - then went right down the bdy fence to inspect it + found it in

perfect order. On the narrow wet terrace alongside the Ohau River, I found many much-used cattle camps + heard some of my cattle in the scrub - only saw five of the 15 or so out on the clearings. On return to whare fired some fern on terrace behind stable to see how dry, it went fairly well so if the present dry days continue I should have a chance of firing rest of cut scrub. Mr.Tress + his brother came down in evening for an hour or so.
