Did not go to church in morning but stayed with Maud to help her get dinner. Made myself generally useful + took a photo (24) of Maud preparing vegetables for dinner in the kitchen. After dinner, although it was very hot, Maud + I walked into town + visited the Methodist Church of which I took a photo (25) with Maud on the footpath. We then went to the public gardens in Avenue Road + finding some difficulty getting a shady seat, sat on the grass + talked – related to each other such of our former experiences together as we could remember – afterwards sat under band rotunda till it got cool. Took a photo (26) of Maud on pathway in gardens with rotunda in the background. In the evening I took Maud to church – the interior of the building is as charming as the exterior. The organ is a fine one but seemingly too large for the building – the deep notes causing the air to ripple + vibrate

in an extraordinary + rather unpleasant manner. After return home + supper Maud + I held a private “watch-night” service together in the drawing room, Ralph leaving us undisturbed after Maud whispered to him “Ralph dear, it’s our last evening together”. We retired at 11 pm after a very happy time.
