went down to Professor Mill’s address to farmers on how the Labour party is to be their benefactor. A fat little man with side whiskers and a great idea of his powers as an actor – sly winks, slow smile, blank face, etc. Mr J.C. Neill, with whom I had a long conversation after the meeting, described Mills as a “hot air merchant”. My subject of conversation with Neill was his supposed discovery of fossils (trilobites) in the Tararuas, + also geology + his experiences in USA. I found that he hadn’t made a discovery of fossils, the report being the result of a joke he had had with Mr. Field, ex MP.
