Family: Tectariaceae

Recognition:

  • no trunk even though the fronds are very large.
  • the sori are away from the margin of the frond lamina, with kidney-shaped indusia.
  • a raised ‘tooth’ is present between lobes of the lamina of the frond.

Distribution: in Fiji, in forests throughout except at higher altitudes.  Also occurs in Philippines, New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Samoa.

Other Fijian species of Pleocnemia can also reach a large size, but none form trunks.
