Angiopteris evecta

Topic

Overview

Family: Marattiaceae

Recognition:

  • no trunk even though the fronds very large.
  • the secondary pinnae are very large.
  • the sporangia are clustered in sori aligned near the margin of the underside of the lamina of the frond.

Distribution: widespread through the tropics.

Ptisana smithii is similar, but not as big and the sporangia in each sorus are fused together rather than being more or less free.
Angiopteris opaca is sometimes also recognised from Fiji, with it supposedly being scalier than A. evecta.
