Leonard Cockayne's handwriting

Topic

Overview

Leonard Cockayne's more formal labels are a very neat cursive style, almost calligraphic, with letters of equal size and even roundness. Others however are rougher, many signed later with his initials. He quite often wrote an 'n' to look like a 'u' as the word 'range' shows in one of these examples. Even in his tidiest hand he rarely closed the 'counter' (space inside a letter) on to the stem, in capitals like 'P', 'B' and 'R'. Cockayne's writing bears some similarities to William Martin's but is more sloping. He often wrote dates using a slash between day / month / year.
