'Most intrepid investigator'

The Royal Society struck a special medal to commemorate James Cook's death. Cook's election to this select group of scientists in 1775 marked the esteem in which he was held across Europe. The Latin inscription around his portrait means 'he was the most intrepid investigator of the oceans'.
