Trading materials

Topic

Overview

This hafted toki maka uli (black stone adze) is an important example of how materials were traded across the Pacific to make tools.

The lashing of the toki is typically Niuean, but Niue island does not have the volcanic stone from which the blade is made. The oval-sectioned shape of the adze indicates that the stone was likely to have been sourced from the western Pacific.
