Telling yarns

Topic

Overview

Missionary wives taught needlework to local Maori women, influencing indigenous weaving techniques. The mawhitiwhiti (decorative surface pattern) on this child’s wrap shows the influence of European cross-stitch. The colourful wool and dyes are also introduced.

Eterina Wright made the wrap for baby Florence Rogers, who later gave it to Te Papa.
