Overview
Botanist Joseph Banks was one of the richest men in England. He spent £10,000 of his own money on Cook's first voyage (1768-71) - an enormous amount at the time. When he returned, he became a celebrity.
This print is based on a portrait by distinguished painter Benjamin West. Banks wears a magnificent kaitaka pātea (fine flax cloak) and is surrounded by souvenirs from his voyage.
