A sound sleep

Topic

Overview

Wooden or bamboo headrests are common across the Pacific. They no doubt intrigued early European visitors, who were more accustomed to pillows to ensure a sound sleep.

This delicate headrest from the Society Islands is carved from a single piece of wood. It once belonged to Queen Victoria, having been collected on James Cook’s first or second voyage.
