On his Pacific journeys, James Cook carried various ‘trifles’, as he called them, for trade and as goodwill gifts. This iron club, forged in England, poorly imitates a Māori patu (striking weapon). Collector Harry Beasley, who found it in a junkshop, declared: ‘It would be a most unserviceable weapon … its great weight would retard its utility'.
