Way of the warrior

Topic

Overview

Pre-European Pacific societies had a long history of interaction, both peaceful and confrontational. Armed conflict was among the accepted ways in which groups resolved disputes – over resources, honour, or other concerns. Often, chiefs were great warriors as well as community leaders, whose prestige increased through battle. In some societies, children were schooled in combat from an early age.

In this section, you can see examples of the diverse weaponry of the islands. You can also get an insight into how warriors conducted themselves before, during, and after battle.

Weapons were highly valued, particularly because of the role that warriors played in preserving and taking life. Some weapons were given personal names, and many have been handed down as family heirlooms over generations. They carry the prestige of warrior ancestors, whose exploits live on through stories, chants, and songs.
