Overview
Tuatara
Tuatara are represented by two endemic species in New Zealand, and are found no where else in the world. Tuatara are not lizards, but they are the sole living representatives of an order of reptiles that died out around 200 million years ago.
They are found on 32 off shore islands in New Zealand and are now being translocated to ‘mainland’ island sanctuaries such as the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellington.
