Overview
Pigs (Sus scrofa) were liberated in 1773 and feral animals are still known as "Captain Cookers". They were well established by the 1840's and are still plentiful in more remote and bush areas of both islands, but numbers have been reduced by intensive poisoning. Pigs destroy native vegetation, causing erosion, and will eat native bird life and invertebrates.
