Notable type specimens in the Te Papa collection include those of Antipodean albatross, Gibson's albatross, lesser fulmar prion, New Zealand little bittern, blue shag, Pitt Island shag, Chatham Island rail, buff weka, Auckland Island banded dotterel, Campbell Island snipe, black-billed gull, Chatham Island red-crowned parakeet, Chatham Island tomtit, Poor Knights bellbird, and Vanua Levu long-legged warbler. Te Papa holds the only known specimens of the Vanua Levu long-legged warbler (described in 1975) and Campbell Island snipe (described in 2010).
