Overview
Larger than New Zealand bellbirds, and with a yellow (cf. red) eye, Chatham Island bellbirds were exquisite songsters. Formerly present on the larger islands of the group, Chatham Island bellbirds apparently succumbed to predation by introduced cats during the late 1800s. Its last refuge was on Little Mangere Island, where it was present in 1906 but had died out by 1938.
The Chatham Island bellbird is represented in the Te Papa collection by seven skins, one partial skeleton, one nest and one egg.
