Brake and his early mentor, Doreen Blumhardt, worked together on the lavishly illustrated coffee-table book Craft New Zealand (1981).
It set a new standard in New Zealand for publishing and photographing contemporary craft. And it both reflected and helped change the popular understanding of contemporary craft.
For the first time, craft works were presented not as something folksy, home-made, and functional, but as professionally-fashioned objects suitable for display in an art gallery.
