New Zealand, gift of the sea began life as a National Geographic article. Brake was very disappointed with it, writing to a friend, ‘…I’ve had a row with them [National Geographic] telling them not to ask for my services again unless they give me a free hand in deciding what is finally used’. He was particularly upset that another photographer had been sent to New Zealand to fill ‘gaps’: ‘The shots of the maoris [sic] cooking in hot pools make my blood boil. They had terrific material from my trip…’ But the experience made him more determined: ‘Only hope I can pull the book off now’, Brake concluded.
