Huia in the Te Papa bird collection

Topic

Overview

Te Papa holds about 40 huia skins, half of which are mounted specimens. Very few have precise collection details. Huia are believed to have been confined to the North Island, and specimens with locality data include Puketoi Range (1), Akatarawa (2), Makara (2 - this may be where the collector lived), Pahiatua (1), and Wellington Province (1). Collection dates range from 1880 to 1911; this last date is four years after the last official record (and may relate to when the specimen was acquired by the Dominion Museum), although credible reports continued into the 1920s.

Te Papa also holds the only known huia egg, which is badly damaged, plus 2 skeletons and 31 part skeletons.
