Pouaka Whakairo
Pouaka whakairo are a separate category of carved container that is squarer in form with higher lateral sides than the papahou. Previously believed to be a post-contact innovation it has recently been suggested that the pouaka whakairo is possibly a less common customary form that pre-dates Pākehā contact.
