Overview
Asplenium gracillimum is native to both New Zealand and Australia.
It generally produces fewer bulbils than A. bulbiferum, and has more widely set frond segments. Asplenium gracillimum prefers dryer sites to A. bulbiferum.
Thin-pinnuled plants are occasionally found; these have been incorrectly known as "Asplenium bulbiferum var. tripinnatum".
Asplenium gracillimum is an allo-polyploid of A. bulbiferum and A. hookerianum, being derived from hybridisation and a doubling of chromosome number.
Asplenium cimmeriorum is similar to A. gracillimum, but is smaller and does not produce bulbils. It is restricted to limestone, and is often found near cave entrances.
