Overview
New generations of artists – Māori, Pākehā (European), and others – continue to create artworks in the challenging yet rewarding medium of pounamu.
Modern tools allow carving with new-found intricacy, similar to that in wood carving. Despite this potential, some artists choose to emphasise clear lines and forms.
Lewis Tamihana Gardiner
Leading pounamu carver Lewis Tamihana Gardiner is known for his innovative and accomplished works.
He has been a winner in the bi-annual Mana Pounamu Awards for contemporary Māori design three times – in 1999, 2001, and 2003.
Whiu Waata
Growing up with extended whānau (family) in a rural Māori town gave Whiu Waata a strong cultural foundation for his art. The Hokianga-based carver has also benefited from opportunities to work with and learn from other artists.
Whiu was first a wood carver but now works mainly in pounamu and other types of stone.
