Overview
The coiled form of the first pendant here represents a marakihau (sea monster). According to tribal stories, marakihau could upturn canoes and swallow people whole.
The second pendant is in the form of a manaia (beaked figure), representing a spiritual guardian.
The next three pendants are pounamu versions of shark-teeth adornments.
The spiral-shaped koropepe design probably developed in the late 1800s.
