Teina Davidson is a fifteen-year-old who lives in Manurewa. She is the youngest in a family of six, with two brothers – Manawa and Horouta – still at home as well.
Teina attends Alfriston College, a co-ed high school in the area. She is taking Social Studies, Māori, Science, Physical Education, Fabrics, as well as the compulsory subjects of English and Maths. Physical Education is her favourite subject. Alfriston College has a uniform, and Teina wears a skirt, top, and roman sandals.
Teina uses a laptop at school as quite a bit of her work is online. During the Covid-19 lockdowns, Teina would wake up early, hop on a zoom call with her class, and do as much work as possible on her computer. She says at first it was fun to be able to stay home, but then she got sick of it as she still had to do schoolwork. Her mum, Marama, made them all go on family walks during the lockdowns.
Teina’s main sport is netball, although she likes all team sports. She doesn’t know what she wants to do after high school just yet, but she is leaning towards carrying on with netball. Teina plays in midcourt. Teina recently travelled to a tournament in New Plymouth as part of the Papakura Netball Centre Under 16 Rep Team. There were a number of tournaments around Auckland building up to it.
If she doesn’t have netball training after school, Teina will usually head home and chill or do chores. Teina describes herself as a homebody, preferring to hang out in her room and keep to herself. Sometimes she likes to go shopping with really close friends or stay at their houses.
Teina is really into anime and uses Crunchyroll to watch her favourite series and movies. She has a cell phone which she used to have restrictions around, but not so much now that she is older. Teina uses Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and Snapchat, and Facetimes with her closest cousin who lives in Christchurch.
Teina is an auntie now, with two nieces and a nephew. Her nieces are five and two, and her nephew is five months old. Her parents describe her as an awesome auntie, who plays games with them, helps at bathtime, and growls when they need a growling!
On a typical school day Teina wakes up at 8:30am, as school starts at 9:30am. She is always the first one ready for school, and her dad Paul drops her off. Teina will sometimes have a nap after school or do chores (washing is her main job).
