Overview
Johannes Fluegge (1775-1816) was a German botanist, and important contributor to botanical research in Hamburg. His collection provides an insight into the composition of plant communites around Hamburg and Northern Germany, over 200 years ago.
This is a selection of specimens that were either collected by Fluegge or kept as part of his private herbarium. After his death, Fluegge's herbarium was combined with collections from another German botanist, Ernst Ferdinand Nolte (1971-1875), before being sold to the British Museum (BM). Some of these specimens made their way to New Zealand, via The British Museum, as part of the Hector Foreign Herbarium Acquisition, purchased in 1865 by Sir James Hector (Director of the Colonial Museum, Te Papa's predecessor) while travelling in Europe.
