Overview
Sat. May. 26.
We walked down to Courtenay Place + visited Haydn + Lubranski’s factory to see Vivian. She took us upstairs + gave us a peep into the big workroom full of girls with sewing machines – Viv’s friend, Miss Crawford, also has a chat with us. Took tram to Newtown – visited big tram shed + took photo (13) of interior. Walked through N[ewtown]. Park, past Zoo + up hilltop road. From saddle followed footpath to left, (photo (14) of Evans Bay with sun on water) + descended hill to Bourke St + centre of Kilbirnie. Followed Seatoun Road to the big electricity generating powerhouse on Shag (or Kamp) Point, now in course of construction. Went through the building which is of immense size but only a shell as yet, practically none of the machinery having yet been metalled. Photo (15) of interior.

Photo (16) general view of powerhouse from east side of Miramar Bay. Followed huge concrete sea-wall to Miramar wharf + then through cutting. Climbed bank + took photo (17) of Wellington Gas Co’s [Company’s] plant + southern part of Miramar Flat. The old tunnel constructed by the late J.C. Crawford Esq to drain the old Burnham Water + Miramar Flat appears to have been enlarged + its entrance concreted – a good stream of water passes through it still. Proceeded along M. Avenue to tram route + took car back to Courtenay Place. Hotel for lunch – rain came on + pm. showery. Walked down to Art Gallery in Whitmore St. – N. Chevalier’s paintings + drawings first ate. Took Kelburn Cable Tram to Salamanca Terrace + visited Mr. + Mrs. Fyfe (“Rose” Brown) + saw baby Kirkwood, a fine little chap – descended to Aro St. via the sharply winding Fairlie Road + back to hotel to dinner. Out again in evening to Grand Opera House + sat in the Gallery (quite an interesting experience) to witness the film “Robin Hood” with Douglas Fairbanks in leading part. Great backgrounds + splendid photography. Uproar in hotel during night (1.30am) on acc[ount]. of people having to throw out a party of people drinking.
