Fine day. Cycled down to the opening of the Weraroa Peace Memorial Gates. 1/2pl[ate]. photo (1) of Memorial Gates. 1/4pl. (2) Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. W.J. Massey, disembarking from train to rly stn [railway station]. 1/4pl. (3) Mr. Massey addressing his guard of honor (school cadets) outside rly. stn. Very large crowd gathered in front of Gates at intersection of Oxford St. + Makomako Road to witness ceremony. I got permission from Mr. Martin to go up on the verandah of his store for photographic purposes + later Mr. Arch. Billens + Elsdon Clark joined me. Mr. Massey accompanies by Sir John + Lady Luke, Messrs Linklater + Nash, M’s. P., the Mayor, Mr. Thomson + others took their stand on a decorated lorry in front of Memorial Gate. 1/2pl. (4) of Gate + official party + crowd from verandah of store. 1/2pl. (5) of Gate + choir +c. Mr. Thomson opened proceedings, the choir sang + Mr. Massey made a speech. He then opened the gate with a gold key. 1/4pl. (6) of official party of lorry + 1/4pl. (7) Mr. Massey opening gate. 1/4pl. (8) the gate open to public + officials forming avenue on either side of gate. A tablet to pioneers of district was also unveiled, tablets with names of pioneers attached to memorial trees, +c. +c. 1/4pl. (9) of unveiling of principal tablet by Mr. J. Bevan. Elsdon Clark + I walked in to Levin + I cycled home. Cut penny royal + opened out drain on west side of Long p[addock]. with drag. Successfully developed all photos in evening.
