Anniversary day. Wrists still weak so did not do much. About middle of morning a fearful rainstorm came over from NE + the water fell in solid sheets. A midday got a ring on ‘phone from Mr. Stewart for all of us to spend the afternoon there, it being anniversary day + children disappointed at missing a picnic. Will came up for us with car at 2.30 as it was still raining. A house full of girls + youths: Enid, George Jack + Marjorie Denton, Miss Myrtle Wooll, Jean, Helen + Peter Stewart, Miss Bowles + my family – games + afternoon tea. Rain stopped + I took two 1/2pl[ate]. photos on lawn (1) full group (2) a backblocks wedding. Home to tea + milk – in evening the company came up to Woodside + we had music +c. About 8.pm Fyfe + party called in on their way back to Levin after unsuccessful attempt to cross Tararuas. They got a little beyond Dundas, struck deluges of rain + came down Ohau R[iver]. With it in raging flood + had nervous escapes – rain + dense fog made any chance of crossing over impossible.
