Showers of rain before breakfast. Later, Harry + I drove down to Otaki beach at mouth of river in gig. Left Woodside at 8.45, passed Manukau at 9.50 Otaki 10.40. Went via Rangiwiu Road + reached beach at 11.5. Left gig on beach opposite the new cottages that have been erected between Rangiwiu house + the sea, + walked down to the mouth of the Otaki River. 1/2pl[ate]. photo (1) The mast of the old wreck “City of Auckland.” (2) 1/2pl. Drift log covered with pendant fleshy-stalked barnacles. 1/4pl. (3) Mouth of Otaki River. No great topographic changes have taken place since my last visit to this spot . (? Dec 1919) The lagoon-like former northernly-trending mouth of the river has diminished in size; + the recess on the left side of the river at its mouth has been filled up, the dis-

charging channel now running into the sea practically at right angles. Returned to gig + set out up beach at 12.15 going as far as Byron Brown’s Kiosk settlement. This sea-side resort has now been roaded + considerably extended. 1/2pl. photo (4) of this settlement looking north. Then went for home via Otaki arriving at Woodside 3.5 pm. 1/4pl. photo of Enid Denton who had been spending day with Maud. We all walked through the Reserve bush. Dull day + rather stormy evening.
