Overview
Sun. Sept. 10.
This morning the cow, Brindle, gave 23 lbs of milk – a record so far. At 9.am got a ring from Elsdon Clark , invitation to go for a tramp with him + Bill Walker round north end of Lake Horowhenua + on to beach. Cycled down + we left Salisbury Street at 10.15. Proceeded via Kawiu Road West. Hereabouts the Horo. coastal plain formation has a distinctly clayey texture + is not in the least [samoy?] + is here undoubtedly the finer silts “laid down in deeper water off shore” On reaching the western end of Lindsay Road, we followed a right-of-way across a narrow neck of the Kaihuka swamp on to some splendid flat + low dunes ridges excellently grassed. One of Best + Park’s milking sheds is located here. We bore off to the south + gained the crest of a grassy dune ridge overlooking the patch of white pine bush near the north-western shore of Lake Horowhenua. The edge of this bush curves round a fine grassy flat making a very charming spot. We proceeded westward along the ridge on the southern side of a big swamp, keeping Moutere trig. on our left. Crossed the Hokis road. Skirted a swamp + took 1/4pl. photo (1) of couple of distant lagoon hollows separated by a narrow grassy ridge with Eldson + Bill in foreground. Found Mr. Lancaster’s duck-shooting boat on one of the above lagoons (we traversed the narrow ridge between them Proceeded westward over series of grassy dunes + lunched on top of the last of them. From here we could overlook the “big flat” traversed by Clif. + I on our ride from Moutere to beach on [missing word], on the further side of the flat

being the line of broken dunes (sand-fall) photographed on that occasion. 1/4pl. (2) of big flat + line of sand-falls. Setting off again we skirted the northern edge of the big flat, crossed drifting sand area + came out on beach at the Hydrabad wreck. Got on wreck and took 1/4pl. (3) from deck looking south. Tramped down beach to Hokis in 27 minutes. Visited cottage occupied by Mr. and Mrs. J Harvey + family + were entertained at pm. tea. Tramped on in to Levin – drove from the old pah to town in Jimmy Rose’s spring cart leaving the others to continue on foot, it being necessary for me to hasten home to milk. A very enjoyable day though rather warm + a very good outing in agreeable company.
