Rather a bad day with cows. Found Lady had calved – a heifer calf. After good deal of trouble got her in bails with Maud’s help. Put up new yard + house for calf which I intend to keep. In pm drove Maud + children down to Lancaster’s to say

farewell to Amy Smith who returns home with the baby next week. Took 1/2pl[ate]. photo of Amy + baby. 7 weeks old today. Spent most of time in garden with Mr. Lancaster. Home early to milk. Had a bad time trying to get Lady into bails – George came over to help but we had to give it up at last after knocking the cow about a good deal. Today also Clif lost a second good cow the day after calving, which seems unreasonably hard luck.
