Overview
Thurs. July. 28.
Over to Cheslyn Rise to assist feeding out turnip shells. At 11 am Father, Mr W Stewart, Clif + I went in Cheslyn Rise car to the big dispersal sale of Friesian + Friesian-cross +c dairy stock at the Boys Training Farm on Kimberley Rd. On-arrival found a large attendance of buyers + others partaking of the light luncheon provided + joined them. 1/4 pl[ate] photo (1) of crowd at lunch. The sale was conducted by Dalgety + Co with Mr Bond as auctioneer, in the Farm yards along side [sic] the big milking shed. 1/4 pl[ate] (2) of sale in progress (missing word here?) ½ pl. (3) of sale in progress. For the most part prices for cows calving Aug +Sept ranged from £15 to £20. A nice line of 2-yr Friesian heifers in calf went for the moderate price of £7.15.0 + 18 month (sic) heifers (empty + rather low condition)
[page break]
£5.5.0. A 3-yr Clydesdale Stallion fetched £49.7.0 (47 gns). I also took 1/2 pl[ate] photo (4) of the 80-bail cowshed + huge concrete yard on three sides of which the shed runs; also 1/2 pl (5) interior of shed showing rear wall (concrete) + feeding racks + heads of cows in bails. The weather was pleasant but dull, + the sale interesting + refreshments plentiful so we had a very good time. Motored home via Levin. Successfully developed today's + Sunday's photos in evening.
