Overview
Walk with Me
I don’t regard these canvases as ‘paintings’ … They are just bits of a place I love and painted in memory of a friend … who now - in spirit - has walked the same beach.
Colin McCahon, 1973
Colin McCahon set his sweeping multi-canvas work Walk (Series C) at Muriwai beach. The work is, in part, an imagined walk along the beach with the poet James K Baxter, who had died the year before. Like Baxter, McCahon wrestled with his Christian faith, and was influenced by Māori spirituality. Walk (Series C) is a meditation on a ‘walk’ common to both traditions - the journey from life to death and beyond.
From October 2013 to March 2014, contemporary writers, musicians, and dancers responded to Walk (Series C). A selection of these responses were recorded.
