Overview
Known as oldest city in the Netherlands, it was the imperial residence of Charlemagne and during the Carolingian emperors of the 9th century. Castle was destroyed by Vikings and rebuilt by Frederick Barbarossa in 1155 (later destroyed by French). Chartered in 1184. Joined Hanseatic League in 1364 and the Union of Utrecht against Spain 1579.
