Overview
Ancient country in North Africa, north of the Sahara, with borders roughly coextensive with modern Algeria. Its two tribes divided during the Second Punic War (218-201 BCE), one supporting the Romans, the other the Carthaginians. Suffered during civil war and Jugurthine War (111-106 BCE). Became a Roman province in 46 BCE and later a part of Mauretania; the capital was Cirta and its most important city Hippo, the see of St. Augustine. It flourished until the Vandals invades in 428 CE.
