Merseyside

Metropolitan county on the northwest coast of England; it was created in 1974 from southwestern Lancashire and northwestern Cheshire. It 1996 its administrative powers shifted to the five unitary authorities of Knowsley, Sefton, Wirral, St. Helens, and Liverpool. Occupies both banks of River Mersey; comprises marshlands and low cliffs; proximity to Ireland has influenced place names and culture.
