Overview

Important cross-Channel passenger port; once a "limb" of the Cinque Port of Dover; was heavily bombed during World War II; birthplace of 17th-century physician, William Harvey, who discovered blood circulation; there are remains of a Roman villa at East Cliff but so-called 'Caesar's Camp' is Norman; the 13th-century parish church stands on the site of a 7th-century Saxon nunnery.
