Overview

Located on the site of Roman town of Glevum; center for leather and cloth trade from 12th-16th centuries; Perpendicular style cathedral, begun in 1089, contains grave of Edward II; world's first Sunday school was founded here by Robert Raikes in 1780; the New Inn is a 15th-century pilgrims' hostel; William I commissioned the 'Domesday' survey here at his Christmas council of 1085.
