Overview

The Roman name 'Lactodorum' means 'town of dairy farmers;' the town grew up along Roman Watling Street. The town was fortified by Edward the Elder and his sister Ethelfleda, ca. 910-921. The Saracen's Head Inn was immortalized by Charles Dickens in "The Pickwick Papers."
