Overview

Located on the River Lune; built on site of and named after a Roman camp; town was burned by Scots in 1322 and 1389; was flourishing port in the late 18th century; industries include furniture and linoleum manufacturing; noted for 15th-century St. Mary's Church which is on a Roman site and contains Anglo-Saxon work and 14th-century choirstalls; the city is dominated by its castle which has a Norman keep.
