Overview
Formed from the unification of two villages by Count Willem V in 1355. Once, prosperous, the town fell into decline due to several factors among them the silting of the harbor, the rise of Amsterdam, and the destruction of the herring fishing fleet in 1625. Population diminished to 6,000 after 1635 due to an outbreak of the plague.
