Saarland is a state of southwestern Germany, bordered by the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate on the north and east, by Luxembourg on the west, and France on the south. Its area encompasses some 992 square miles on both sides of the Saar river. The capital is Saarbrücken. The state generally is rich in coal deposits and is known for its iron and steel industries. It was a prime producer of armaments and weaponry in World War II and thus was a major target for Allied bombing, suffering great destruction. The calculated population for 2005 was 1,061,840.
