Overview
Tehran province is surrounded by the Semnan, Markazi, Mazandaran, and Zanjan provinces. The present-day city of Tehran was originally the home to the Iranian capital of Rayy, which the Mongols destroyed in 1220. Tehran officially became the capital in 1788.
