Varanasi

One of 7 sacred Hindu cities; it was the base of Aryan religion & philosophy by the 2nd millennium BCE. The city declined under Muslim rule beginning in 1194, and was later revived during Maratha rule. Varanasi is visited by over 1 million pilgrims every year.
