Overview
The region of Vychodocesky is located in the northern central Czech Republic on the northern border with Poland. It comprises the Krkonose Mountains to the north from which the Elbe River rises and extends down to a lower plain area, which then rises gently to highlands and mountains to the east and south. It measures some 4340 square miles in size. The region has a variety of resources. Rich agricultural lands produces maize, sugar beets, flax, barley, potatoes, oats, rye, and vegetables. One third of the land is forested and lumbering and papermaking are important economic activities. It mineral resources include a large bitumous coalfield plus deposits of fluorite, nickel, sand, gravel, and clay. The Krkonose Mountains to the north are an important locale for summer and winter recreation. Industries include textile and clothing manufacture, metallurgy, chemical manufacture, woodworking, and food processing.
