Overview
Metropolitan county in northwestern England covering an area of 1287 sq km. It was created in 1974 from southeastern Lancashire and parts of northeastern Cheshire and southwestern Yorkshire. In 1986 administrative powers were devolved to the unitary authorities of Wigan, Bolton, Bury, Rochdale, Salford, Oldham, Manchester, Trafford, Stockport, and Tameside.
