Overview
A county in northeastern England and a historical division of Yorkshire; located on the North Sea and the Humber estuary. It became part of the new county of Humberside in 1974 but when this was abolished in 1996, separate unitary authorities were created for East Riding and its chief city, Hull (Hull is still considered part of the East Riding for ceremonial and related purposes). The area is mainly flat and low-lying, rising to the Yorkshire Wolds in the north. Arable farming, fishing, and tourism are the prevalent economic activities. Beverley is its adminstrative center; it has an area (excluding Hull) of 675 sq mi (1748 sq km).
