Verdun-sur-Meuse

Prosperous center in Roman times; scene of Treaty of Verdun which partitioned the empire of Charlemagne in 843; seized from Holy Roman Empire by Henry II together with Metz and Toul 1552; fortified by Vauban in the 17th century; center of defense against Prussia in 1871.
